This is an interview between Marc Lemire the Sysop of Digital Freedom and a reporter from a British Magazine called ".net" Look for the article in the October edition. This was conducted on 07/06/95 via E-mail.
-> 1. Postings in White Nationalist and related websites tend to be -> well-written, suggesting authors with good educations; yet North -> American schools actively discourage such sentiments. What -> individuals or events moved you to adopt your political views? When I was growing up my parents always taught me to believe in what ever I wanted to, no matter how unpopular it might be. So I think right from my early childhood I was taught to question the status quo. When I started high school I met some people who were involved with a Racialist organization called the "Heritage Front" I began reading their material and thought it was quite interesting. So I went to a meeting. After about 2 more meeting I was quite into it and helping to spread the word of White Power. From that time on I began reading and reading, more and more and began to become a leader in the Canadian movement. I started up a hotline called the Canadian Patriots Network in Nov 1, 1993. From that hotline I could reach thousands of people around the world every week. We actually had a regular caller from South Africa. After 1 1/2 years of that I descided that I could reach far more people over the Internet and through a BBS I was starting up. So in April 1, 1995 I started up Digital Freedom BBS (416) 462-3327. I also got 2 Internet sites and began forging alot of contacts with likeminded people on the Internet. Within 4 months I had a E-mailing list of around 400+ and contacts with all the Sysops and leaders through out the Untited States and Canada. We are also working quite closley with European leaders. We have our address on 2 Web sites and I post to usenet almost everyday. -> 2. Most occupations are closed to persons with White Nationalist or -> what the media might call "extreme right" views. Can you discuss your -> own career, and has it suffered as a result of your political -> opinions? My career has not suffered all that much so far because I am still only 20 years old and just starting out. I plan on becomeing a Paramedic and have trained in the Canadian Armed Forces. I am also going to go to College in the New year and take some courses called "AMCA" Ambulance Care. This is the same as an EMT or Emergency medical technician. But my politics have affected my personal life. I have been spit at, got into a few fights and been harrassed by the Left in Canada. In Toronto the Left wing has a radio show called Uppercut where the hosts called me a drunk and said quite sexually abusive remarks about me. The funny thing is I do not even drink and I am not Gay. -> 3. What personal traits do you find you share with like-minded -> persons? Do these traits cross national lines--for example, do -> sympathetic Europeans or Canadians share the traits you see among -> sympathetic Americans? Do you see differences among such -> nationalities? I feel the most common trait we share, and this is true across the world, is a love for our race. We are proud to be White and most of us are not afraid to say it. Also we belive in Freedom. And belief in freedom of speech and freedom of expression is a trait that is also world wide. -> About the Net: -> -> 4. When did you first use the Net for political expression? I first used the 'net to advertise my Hotline back in Nov, 1994. I got quite a good respone, so I continually posted the same message over and over again for about a month. I thought the 'net was a bastion of free speech and I wanted to learn how to use it right away. -> 5. When did you establish your own site? I established my own personal one back in Nov, 1994. I started up by Euphoria account around March, 1995. From there I do most of my 'netting. In the late spring of this year I started up another Internet account with Inforamp where I will have a WEB site and an FTP address. -> 6. Did opinions on the Net influence the development of your own -> political views? Yes it did. After speaking to such a large amount of people I became aware of the world wide struggle for White rights. I also met many people who I speek to on a very regular occasion and work very closley with. So the net made me and us in Toronto World Wide. -> 7. Do you see any differences between Net-using sympathizers and -> those sympathizers who don't use (or have access to) computers? Yes I do. I find that the net users are on a whole much more intelligent and less likely to fall into 'Hollywood's" stereotype of what a Pro-White person should be. -> 8. Do you see a relationship between activity on your site and -> political events? For example, do more people log in after a dramatic -> event or political statement? Yes. When a big event happens like Ernst Zundels house being firebombed, it sparks great interest. From the first day I began to publicise it with GIF pictures of his house I recieved over 25 new users. So basically when ever a big event happens people are willing to pay the long distance charges to get information anf files about it. -> 9. Do you find the Net a serious means of recruiting, as judged by -> the supportive follow-up messages as a proportion of the "hits" on -> your website? Yes it the best recruiting tool we have. For example my mailing list from Digital Freedom grow from only 5 people back in April to over 400 people now. That is only 3 months. If it continues that way for a year I will have reached 1600 people in a year. Not bad! We also recruit the old way by flyering and by phone messages. All in all we get about 2200 new people per year, with that number increasing everyday because of the amount of new users to the net per month. 10. As a means of promoting your views, do you find the Net more or less effective than other media--for example, print or radio? Can you give an example? I find the net to be very effective. Firstly it is cheaper than old methods like flyering, mail, etc. It is very quick and the results are measurable. When we used to post flyers on poles, it was very hard to accuratley judge the amount of people who actually seen the flyer and called. 11. Apart from the groups and individuals listed on your site, what other White Nationalists or sympathizers are active on the Internet? There are quite a few. Here is a short list starting with us. Canadian Patriots Network, Marc Lemire Ernst Zundel (Samisdat) British National Party (BNP) Dan Gannon (Banished CPU) Greg Raven (Institute for Historical Review) National Alliance George Burdi (Resistance Records and the band RaHoWa) Les Griswold Mckinstry Don Black (runs a BBS and Stormfront WWW site) Rick Knight (Aryan News Service) Reuben Logsdow (Runs CyberHate WWW) Liberty Net (Runs hotline, soon to have WWW site) Rick Savage (Runs Scriptures For America) Kevin A Strom (Runs National Alliance Radio) Jack Wikoff (Runs Revisionist newletter) Resistance Records White Aryan Resistance Klu Klux Klan And there is many many more less vocal supporters. The ones I named are just a few I came up with off the top of my head. I personally have a mailing list of over 400 people. And that is in just THREE months since I started up the service. 12. Many opponents of your views call for regulation of the Net. Have you or others suffered any restriction on your access to the Net? If so, how have you dealt with the problem? Yes in Toronto some local providers decided to play self censors. In the States places like Prodigy also tried. Since we found that many providers in the Toronto area did not want us to have the same right to freedom of speech as they entitle others we decided to start up our own internet provider. Starting either later this month or early next month I will be having Internet put onto my BBS. Our domain name will be "df.org" whereas the DF stands for Digital Freedom.(The name of the BBS) 13. Are you aware of any "hostile monitoring" of your site by government or other organizations? If so, what form does such monitoring take? (For example, does your site suffer heavy downloads of junk e-mail or other kinds of harassment?) So far we have not had any problems. The police and the Canadian Jewish Congress along with a local Indian group have commented to the local press about "watching" my BBS. I would assume that all they do to monitor is to download a few files and a QWk packet every week. The Future 14. Opponents of your views fear that the Net makes it easier for you to link up with like-minded persons, and thereby to gain greater influence. Assuming they are right, how do you foresee yourself and others exerting such influence, both on the Net and through other media? We have already started to show our influence on the Internet. From the huge numbers of responsive people to the over 3000 calls to my BBS and 10,000's to the WEB site. I see us gaining quite alot of support over the Internet because finally people can examine us and what we think. Once we talk to them and give them some information the Media stereotype of us breaks down and we no longer look like goose-steeping, hitler loving terrorists... People can relate to our common sence revolution on a personal basis. 15. In a 21st-century society reformed along the lines you prefer, what changes do you foresee in North American and European social institutions--for example, education, health care, the military, the church, and government itself? If we had want we want, which is what I assume you are asking... We would have propaganda free education, where blacks could have there own courses, Jewish people could learn all they want about the Holocaust and us Whites could learn exclusivley about white history. I see health care going private in Canada because the government every year is speading more than they are taking..so it's only a matter of time till the trough runs dry. I see the military falling apart. I am in the Canadian Armed forces and I see the differences in people. Not many can get along with people of different origins and the Canadian government is slowly disbanding it. Just last month they shut the Airborne regement down because of the amount of Racism it had. The Canadian Airborne Regement was the most elite fighting unit the Army had.... Does it make sense to disband it?! The church is falling apart from within. Not very many youths are becoming preists and religion is loosing it foothold in the Canadian and American personality. And finally I see the government getting bigger and bigger. They keep passing more repressive laws, which makes the whole system stronger to with hold dissidents and bigger in the process. So in the end it benefits politicians to make the government bigger. They have jobs, there children have jobs and they can get votes because they created socalled jobs... Even though the public doesn't realise that the increased taxes they pay every year goes to pay for these jobs. They are really stabbing themselves in the Ass. 16. Do you foresee a purely free-enterprise economy, or would it operate under any particular restrictions--for example, would employers be free to hire workers from any racial group, or would they hire only from specifically designated groups for particular jobs? In Canada we have laws that force employers to hire minorities, women, handicapped and indians. I see face of business changing. From most if not all of the employers I have talked to say they will run there company a different way to not get forced to hire people they do not want. In Canada you ahve to hire more than 50 people to be forced to do this. So many say then they will hire only 49. Others are just out right mad that the government is budding into their business and telling them who to hire. Basically I forsee many more smaller business. According to a poll last week small business is the fastest growing sector of the Canadian economy. I also see many more regulation and much more red tape. 17. How would such a government deal with dissent? Basically if they ban dissedints they make them stronger and more committed to getting their message out. Look at Germany, look at the huge controversy over the Holocaust laws and immigration laws. So the government makes us stronger by banning us. Generally it will make front page news in Canada if you go to jail for what you think. A good case is the Zundel case in Canada. The government took Zundel to court for saying basically the Holocaust was a Hoax. He was front page news from 9 years and then became a household name in Canada. In my opinion the government should stop trying to control the way people think and the way people can express themselves. If I don't like Jewish people or if Jewish people don't like me, I don't think we should go to jail for it. To sum up: If the government charges us we just get free media and the group gets stronger and louder. If they leave us alone then we just go about recruiting the same way we are going. 18. How would such a government deal with foreign governments opposed to it,? If we were in power, we would work in the global village. I have no wish to make enemy of other states but I totally disagree with the idea of a UNited Nations. I feel that every country should have control, 100% control over it's own lands. And another thing... This questionnaire obviously can't deal with every issue; but if you feel other issues deserve mention--especially Net-related issues--please feel free to discuss them here.
